Most applicants for admission are often left confused trying to get the
reason why they were not offered admission to the institution of their choice
despite having a high UTME score. Sometimes, having a high Post-UTME is no
guarantee that you will be admitted.
The following are some of the reasons students may not be offered admission
despite having a high score in Post-UTME.
1. University Guiding Principle:
Despite the
general guiding principle of the catchment area, some universities still have
their individual policy adopted as a criterion for admission of students in
their various institutions. Often, these principles are not made public.
Therefore, it is the duty of the applicants for admission to find out the
specific admission policies/principles of their prospective institutions
through some friends schooling in these universities.
2. WAEC [O'level] Result:
My advice to applicants seeking for admission is to
pass all the necessary subjects in his/her O'level well before proceeding to
take the UTME exam. I've met a lot of students who lost their admission because
they have no credit pass at least on some important subjects in his/her O'level
result.
Recently, I met
a student who lost her admission to study medicine owning to the fact that she
did not have at least a credit pass in Mathematics in her O'level result. In
fact, I felt so bad for her because admission to study a competitive course as
medicine is not an easy task to accomplish.
3. Incorrect UTME Subject Combination:
This is one reason a number of students lose their
admission despite beating the cutoff- mark in their P-UTME examination.
Sometimes, some students are being denied of their admission or moved to
another department during the registration process in their first year simply
because of the wrong subject combination during JAMB registration.
For example, a student seeking for admission to study
Engineering definitely lose admission if he or she did not take Physics as part
of his/her four subject for consideration in UTME. Similarly, a student who
seeks admission to study Medicine and Surgery will definitely be rejected if he/she
did not make biology as part of its subject combination in JAMB. Before any student
registers for JAMB, he or she should go carefully through the JAMB brochure to know
the combination suitable for his or her preferred course of study.
4. Low JAMB (UTME) Score:
Most times, I pity
Jambites who score within the range of 180 to 210 because such scores will
limit their chances of getting admission into their preferred course of study.
In this situation, they have to compete for the same slot with students who
scored as high as 250 or more. And most universities still compute both scores
after Post UTME and calculate the average score of the students.
Therefore,
having a low score in UTME can also hinder one's opportunity for admission. It
is always advisable for students to attempt to score 250 and above in order to
be on a safer side. In fact, it is very necessary in relation to the policy of
redirecting JAMB students with lower scores in utme to less competitive
universities.
5. The University Catchment Area:
Most federal universities, including some state
universities still maintain the policy of catchment area in the selection of
students for admission. For example, the catchment area of FUTO is mostly South
Eastern states. What this implies is; prospective students of South - South or South
West are not more likely to be considered for admission.
For example, a prospective student from Imo state who
scored 190, applying to study Industrial Chemistry can be offered admission,
while another student from Oyo State who scored 210 may not be offered
admission.
This is because if the cutoff of Imo state uptake is
190, while the general line of cut is 220, an aspirant from Oyo State has
definitely lost the admission despite having a higher score than its
counterpart in the catchment area. In view of the above, applicants for
admission must always be aware of the catchment area of a university and requirements
before selecting the university.
